Guru Gembul - Antara Takdir dan PILIHAN

Takdir atau pilihan kita yang menentukan pilihan kita? Apakah memilih itu adalah takdir? Tentu saja, kemampuan kita untuk memilih itu sudah disiapkan sama takdir. Takdir kitalah sebagai manusia, untuk bisa memilih sesuatu. Tetapi takdir pilihan kita, itu ada batasnya.

Bahwa pilihan kita itu, hanya bersifat reaksi bukan aksi. Wajah saya begini itu, itu adalah takdir (saya tidak memilihnya). TAPI dengan wajah seperti ini, saya bereaksi dengan cara seperti apa? saya manfaatkan dengan cara seperti apa? dan sebagainya. 

Pilihan manusia itu sepenuhnya adalah responsif, bukan aksi. Termasuk juga misalkan, Saya memilih sekolah di mana? Itu pilihan saya. TAPI setelah saya milih satu sekolah, kemudian saya sekelas dengan teman ini, dengan cewek ini, ketemu dengan guru yang seperti ini, diperlakukan dengan cara begini dan begitu, itu adalah takdir. 

Nanti setiap kita ketemu dengan cewek itu yang adalah takdir, kita kemudian merespon lagi. Apakah dengan si cewek itu, misalkan ya, kita berpasangan atau kita berjauhan, atau temen aja dan sebagainya. Nanti kalaupun kita memilih untuk berpasangan dengan si cewek itu, misalkan ya.. itu adalah pilihan kita sendiri. Tetapi nanti yang terjadi setelahnya, sikap2 kita dan sebagainya, itu adalah takdir lagi. Jadi kehidupan kita itu antara takdir dan pilihan berselingan gonta ganti. Aksinya dari takdir itu, sedangkan berikutnya itu adalah pilihan kita sendiri.

Fate or our choices that determine our lives? Is the act of choosing itself part of fate? Of course — it is fate that has given us the ability to choose. It is our destiny as human beings to have the capacity to choose. But even so, the range of choices we have is "still limited".

Our choices are more reactive than proactive. For instance, my face — that’s fate (I didn’t choose it). BUT with this face, how do I respond? 

How do I make use of it? That’s where choice comes in.

Human choices are essentially responsive, not purely initiated. Take this example: choosing school — that’s my choice. BUT once I make that choice, and end up in a class 

• with these particular friends, 
• with this girl, 
• with this kind of teacher, 
• and experience things in certain ways — that’s fate.

Then, when we meet the girl — which is fated — we respond again. 

Do we end up 

• in a relationship? 
• drift apart? 
• stay just friends? 

That’s our choice. 

And even if we choose to be with her, everything that unfolds afterward — our attitudes, behaviors, and circumstances — is again shaped by fate. So life is "a constant dance" between fate and choice, taking turns. Fate initiates the action, and we respond with our choices.
